Pronunciation

The English language is also divided into two other production divisions.  These divisions are “vowels” and “consonants.”  The basic difference is in the way in which the sound is emitted from the mouth or nose.

“Vowel” means that the sound is emitted without obstruction.  “Consonant” means that the sound is emitted after, during or with obstruction.  “Practice makes perfect,” is an old saying, but   just practice does not always make perfect. You must have guided practice to speak English perfectly and know it well.  That you remember permanently each word you learn to pronounce correctly should be your goal as you study English and learn to speak it.

Mrs Spilios is a professor in the Department of Speech at Los Angeles City College for over sixty years.  She received her master’s degree from the University of Southern California, and bachelor’s degree from the Pittsburg State University.  She was named “outstanding American educator” by the Outstanding Educators of America.  Throughout her illustrious career, she has touched the lives of both international and domestic students.  Her many students, along with Dr. Kang, have credited their personal speech improvements from her lessons, and many of them now serve eminent jobs as doctors, ministers, judges, and teachers.  Jane Spilios is still teaching speech classes, and is always on the look for bright new students to pass her wisdom to.
